On episode 45 of The Nurse Keith Show, I offer some clear-eyed inspiration for nurses who no longer want to feel limited by the voices and opinions that seek to constrict nurses’ individual and collective potential. We can play big or small in our careers, and there’s no reason why you can’t play big if you choose to. This episode was inspired by a recent post over on my blog, Digital Doorway.
(NOTE: please scroll to the bottom of the post to listen to the podcast!)
Nurses hear a lot of “shoulds” throughout their careers, beginning in nursing school, and continuing until (and after) retirement:
- You should be a doctor, not a nurse.
- You should get a job in MedSurg.
- You shouldn’t get a job in MedSurg.
- School nursing isn’t really nursing.
- You can’t start a business; nurses aren’t business owners.
- You should go to grad school.
- You shouldn’t go to grad school.
- There are no nursing jobs
- You shouldn’t quit.
- You should ___________.
- You shouldn’t ____________.
What “shoulds” have you been fed? How have you limited yourself? What do you need/want to do in your nursing career, and how would you like to go about it?
Do you color outside of the lines? Do you not even see the box into which others want to place you? Or, have you always wanted to break out of the box and color outside the lines, but haven’t yet had the nerve to do so?
No matter where you are in your nursing career, this episode of The Nurse Keith Show is for you!
