On this special bonus COVID-19 update, Nurse Keith discusses reaching the grim milestone of half a million Americans dead from COVID-19, approaching one year of the coronavirus pandemic, pandemic fatigue, and other reflections on the state of the world as we close the chapter on February 2021.

We are now beyond 500,000 deaths in the US, 2.5 million worldwide. And why is the U.S. 20% of deaths and only 4% of the population? Meanwhile, California-based deaths have now surpassed 50,000, making that state’s loss roughly one in 10 of coronavirus deaths in the U.S.

On this episode, Keith also discusses meaning, loss, collective grief, and compassion fade and how our brains work in the face of such loss. Please check out Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s coronavirus podcast episode regarding the concept of compassion fade.

An American Nurses Association survey, conducted in December 2020, found that close to 75% of nurses reported feeling exhausted in the last two weeks — not unexpected in a profession that keeps you on your feet for half a day.
