How have you used your voice in the course of your nursing career? What does your voice say about how you show up in the world as a nurse, a citizen, and a human being?
Your Voice Matters
How are nurses’ voices perceived based on the fact that the public views us as such trusted professionals?
Our voices are seen as imbued with compassion, logic, and caring.
What were you taught about your voice as a child or teenager? Were you told that your opinion mattered? How has your voice manifested as an adult professional?
As a nurse, you may use your voice to give report, provide patient and family teaching, or communicate with other colleagues.
Finding your voice as a healthcare professional is key! How have you built confidence in your ability to communicate over the years?
You’ve probably seen and heard nurses using their voices in negative ways, such as bullying, teasing, incivility, and intimidation. But you can choose to use your voice to speak truth to power and be a change agent.
You can use your voice to speak out to administrators, managers, and executives in your workplace. You can also give your expert input to your state or local legislators and politicians, as well as your national representatives (like Members of Congress or senators here in the United States or Members of Parliament in England).
You can use your voice in small ways and big ways. You can speak up at work, in your community, or even running for elected office. Are you the next mayor of your town or city?
Writing letters to the editor, podcasting, blogging, or using social media are all ways to use your voice in relation to the media.
Your voice is reflected by your resume, your business card, your LinkedIn profile, and your conversations with colleagues, neighbors, friends, and family members.
Find the power of your voice, and then use that voice in the ways that suit you and your nursing career best.
