Why Nurses in the Job Market Must Embrace Sales, Branding, and Marketing | The Nurse Keith Show, EPS 263

On episode 263 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing career podcast, Keith discusses why marketing, branding, and sales must be concepts that nurses embrace in order to position themselves within a highly competitive 21st-century job market.

Many nurses feel very uncomfortable with the notion of selling themselves, of course, and the concept of branding and marketing can also feel unnatural and “corporate”. That said, the reality in the 21st century is that one must be willing to assertively market themselves

When you’re in the job market, you’re the product and you need to convince a potential employer that you’re worth the investment of their money and resources. If onboarding a nurse costs tens of thousands of dollars and replacing that nurse is also costly, an employer wants to make a good choice and hire wisely; thus your job is to convince them that you’re the ideal candidate.

Your brand consists of your personality, your education, your work history, what skills you bring to the table, and how you can make a contribution to an organization, agency, or facility. And your brand is strengthened by the following “nuts and bolts”:

These aspects of your brand are a good place to begin:

  • Interviews
  • Resumes
  • Cover letters
  • LinkedIn profile and savvy use of the platform
  • Business card

Some suggested ways to increase your marketability and credibility:

  • Own your expertise
  • Be willing to wax poetic about what you bring to the table and why you’re awesome
  • Be proud of (and document) your accomplishments
  • Assiduous networking
  • Seek opportunities to shine
  • Assume unofficial leadership at every opportunity
  • Take the risk of being assertive
  • Join committees and volunteer for initiatives within your organization
  • Volunteer in your community
  • Publish articles
  • Demonstrate what you know and who you are
