On episode 290 of The Nurse Keith Show career and healthcare podcast, Keith interviews John Silver, RN, Ph.D., regarding whether redesigning this labyrinthine behemoth of a healthcare system of ours is even possible.

John Silver RN, Ph.D was an associate professor at NOVA Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from 2005 to 2015, and is a Fellow at the Institute of Nursing Leadership. He is currently a Program Chair at a growing Nursing College in south Florida. He has been in healthcare for 43 years and a practicing RN since 1984, primarily in critical care. Dr. Silver received an MSN with a focus on health policy and ethics, and his Master s Project was on Proactive Media Utilization. In 2010 he earned the Public Intellectual Ph.D. in Comparative Studies from Florida Atlantic University.

He has presented at such notable conferences as the American Academy of Nursing conference (2000), the 3rd International Design Principles and Practice conference in Berlin, Germany (2009), Florida, and President’s Councils on Bioethics regarding living wills, hospice, and palliative care, The International Technology, Knowledge and Society conference at UCLA (2011), and the first European Sigma Theta Tau International conference in Cardiff, Wales (2012).

He speaks about healthcare system restructuring, political effectiveness and empowerment, ethics in healthcare, and has also served as an adviser regarding political tactics for politicians and nursing organizations, including Advanced Practice Nursing issues such as independent practice and prescriptive authority. Media experience includes hosting the Nursing Spectrum national online discussion for the 2004 election, NPR radio appearances on WLRN, The Florida Roundtable, Public television show in Miami, and a podcast interview for the International Association of Nurses radio station on healthcare system restructuring.

In 2013, he published a book on political effectiveness entitled- just a union…of nurses, Legacy Press. He has also published in JONA’s Journal of Healthcare Ethics, Law, and Regulation. The most recent accomplishment is being selected as an Associate Editor for the online journal- Nursing and Palliative Care International Journal (NPCIJ).
