On episode 298 of The Nurse Keith Show career and healthcare podcast, Keith interviews Tanya Freedman of Connetics USA regarding the process by which international nurses can be brought to the United States in order to bolster our healthcare system and relieve acute shortages of nurses when we need it most.

Tanya Freedman is an industry expert with more than 25+ years of full-cycle recruitment experience. She is the Chief Operating Officer of Connetics USA, the premier specialist helping healthcare facilities throughout the USA with the serious nursing shortage, by providing internationally educated healthcare professionals for direct hire. For the last 13+ years, she has successfully placed thousands of experienced RNs at acute care hospitals, surgery centers, long-term care / skilled nursing, rehab facilities, and correctional organizations throughout America. Tanya says “as a result of the looming nurse shortage, many facilities nowadays are exploring internationally educated RNs as an ‘additional tool in their toolbox’ to supplement their current recruitment and retention of nurses. This solution can be of enormous benefit to healthcare leaders challenged with balancing return on investment, patient safety, and retention issues.” There was a nursing shortage before COVID-19 but this crisis has magnified this issue and is vital to address this so we can bring in “reinforcements” to assist our US nurses and help save lives!

Some statistics from the conversation:

  • ANA predicts 1.1 million new nurses needed by 2022
  • Close to 690,000 nurses will retire by 2024 (ANA)
  • Schools turned away 79,659 nursing applicants in 2018
  • 17% of new grads leave within 1 year, 33.5% within 2 years
  • 7 million US residents 65+ years old by 2050
  • 33% of nurses feel burnt out
  • 120 rural hospitals have closed since 2010 (Forbes)

Tanya considers herself to be a “career matchmaker,”, and she and her dedicated team of specialists work together with healthcare organizations and RNs to ensure a holistic “one size fits one” match and a solid long-term partnership. Tanya was an immigrant herself many years ago and is passionate about building a heart-centered recruitment framework to help facilities set nurses up for success. Tanya says “on a personal level that moving to America was a rollercoaster – one of the happiest but also the scariest and most stressful experiences of my life- and I want to now ‘pay it forward’ for others.”

Connetics USA has built its own proprietary set of tools and methodologies to assist healthcare facilities and nurses make as smooth a transition as possible. They work with each nurse as an individual and are grateful to make a difference and change so many lives — not just the nurse and their families but also the patients they care for.” Under Tanya`s leadership, Connetics USA has developed their own unique “RELI” (R=relocation, E=employment, L=licensing, I=immigration) technology solution, to assist healthcare clients and nurses navigate successfully through the required process.

Tanya holds a Bachelors’s and Master’s degree in psychology from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa). Connetics USA is certified by the CGFNS alliance for ethical recruitment practices, and they are a National Rural Hospital Association (NRHA) Partner. She hosts regular Facebook live sessions on the Connetics USA nursing Facebook page on various pertinent questions, such as nurse immigration, latest legislation updates, licensing, and testing.

Connetics USA has built a massive worldwide database of quality RNs mainly from Canada, the Philippines, UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Nepal, the Middle East, and India.
