On episode 305 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Milagros Phillips, a racial equity coach, keynote speaker, and thought leader also known as “The Race Healer“. The conversation includes thoughts on racial disparities, intergenerational trauma, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS), implicit bias, how to heal the racial divides that separate us, and so much more.
Working with diverse groups including corporate leaders and members of Congress, Milagros has spent the past 35 years facilitating race literacy programs that inform, transform, and lead to inspired action. These programs are presented at educational institutions, corporations, and through public seminars. Milagros is a member of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) RISE Advisory Council as they create greater inclusion in the world of Ballet.
Milagros’s work comes from lived experience and is backed by historical and scientific research. It comes from walking through the shadow to find her light, and in the process, helping others find theirs. What she brings to this work is great compassion, a deep understanding of race, and an awareness of peoples’ individual and collective power.
In her 35 years of facilitating seminars, she found that people often lack the information with which to transform. Without the systemic and institutional background of race and racism, it is difficult to get beyond the personal. The missing information associated with race keeps us in a loop of endless repetition. However, we are not stuck. Race literacy and awareness puts us in the driver’s seat of our lives and allows us to choose differently.
Keynote Speaker, TEDx Presenter, 3-time author, and certified coach, Milagros specializes in creating space for engaging in difficult conversations. She designs strategic learning programs for clients seeking to enhance equity & inclusion (EI) by adding race literacy to their EI initiatives. Her programs use history, science, research, and storytelling to create compelling, life-transforming experiences that lead to understanding.
Milagros is passionate about coaching leaders in championing equity in their organizations. She works closely with clients to quickly
identify challenges and create customized solutions that enhance work relationships and team collaboration. With more than 25 years of experience in learning and development, Milagros consults, designs, and facilitates programs across many industries and services. She co-developed the Race Equity Framework Model to End HIV for The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC). The Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution has incorporated her 2-day seminar, Race Demystified as part of the curriculum in their conflict
resolution certification training since 2010.
Milagros was the senior consultant with Search for Common Ground and The Faith and Politics Institute as they worked collaboratively to develop Congressional Conversations on Race (CCR). Her three-part approach to a race conversation became the foundation for CCR. This program assisted members of Congress in crafting a productive conversation about race leading to community action and collaboration. Milagros was the Founding Executive Director of “The National Resource Center for the Healing of Racism.” She has served as an Expert in Residence for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is fluent in English and Spanish. Milagros is the Producer/Host of Race Healer TV and the creator of Race Healer Magazine.
