On episode 335 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews emergency physician and NY Times bestselling author Michele Harper regarding structural racism, social justice, personal trauma and healing, and the intrinsic vulnerabilities of the American healthcare system. Dr. Harper’s memoir, The Beauty in Breaking, is a stunning personal account of life on the medical frontlines and a deeply spiritual life well-lived.

Keith and Dr. Harper also discuss the author’s firsthand experiences as a doctor in an ER during the COVID-19 healthcare crisis, and her firsthand experiences with racism as a black doctor in a predominantly white profession, and what structural racism in medicine looks like. Additional topics covered include how the road to healing through personal and societal trauma is paved by insight and radical honesty; how personal healing is connected to our access to care, how we are treated at work, receiving a living wage, and being able to walk safely in the streets of our society. According to Dr. Harper, one can’t sincerely consider health without understanding these elements that affect our human experience.

Michele Harper has worked as an emergency room physician for more than a decade at various institutions, including as chief resident at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx and in the emergency department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Harvard University and the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. The Beauty in Breaking is her first book.
