On episode 350 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith describes 20 things you need to know about your nursing career right now. From nurturing your own wellness and finding your mission to networking and pursuing more education, there are plenty of things to contemplate when it comes to growing a satisfying nursing career and personal life.

This solo episode is all about you in your many facets as a human being and healthcare professional. Being a nurse can be wonderful, but it can also be painful, tedious, numbing, and hard on your body, psyche, spirit, and emotional well-being. So you need to remain aware, curious, and attentive to the many aspects of who you are and what you want out of this life (and stay healthy enough to bring those things to fruition).

You need to keep your eyes on the prize, whatever your prize may be!

20 things you need to know about your nursing career right now:

  1. Being a nurse matters
  2. You deserve to be treated with respect
  3. You get to decide what being a nurse means to you
  4. Being a nurse doesn’t need to look like martyrdom
  5. Taking care of yourself and your own needs must be paramount
  6. You need an updated resume on file at all times
  7. Consider what your career mission is, or formulate one if you’re not clear
  8. Also consider what your personal mission may be in this life
  9. Your personal life is important, and you’re in charge of making sure it remains a central focus
  10. Keep your finger on the pulse of your short-, mid-, and long-term plans, both personal and professional
  11. Networking matters — including LinkedIn, social media, professional organizations, as well as keeping in touch with previous colleagues and making connections with colleagues in your current workplace
  12. Speaking of LinkedIn, having a complete profile is important for many reasons, including building a robust network over time, being visible to recruiters and colleagues, as well as  those with whom you are yet to be acquainted
  13. Become an active member of professional organizations of interest
  14. Advancing your knowledge matters, whether it’s pursuing another degree, a certification, taking CEU courses, attending conferences, reading articles, watching videos, or listening to podcasts
  15. In terms of pursuing another degree, do your due diligence so that you make a wise choice. Research, research, research!
  16. You need allies, mentors, and supporters
  17. You have permission to be the nurse you’ve always wanted to be
  18. Nursing is a career but it’s also a personal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual journey
  19. No one can tell you that you’re not a real nurse
  20. Beyond being a nurse, you matter too
