On episode 364 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Emee Baldwin, a senior nursing major who is leveraging her involvement in the Miss America Organization as a contender for the title of Miss Alabama as a launching pad for Poppy’s Purpose, her brainchild focused on making sure that every patient has as an advocate as they navigate the labyrinthine and confusing American healthcare system.
From the website of Poppy’s Purpose:
“Hello! My name is Emee Baldwin and I am the founder of Poppy’s Purpose. I am a nursing major at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a pole vaulter on the track team. Outside of school, I participate in the Miss America Organization and will be competing in Miss Alabama this summer. When I am not involved in these activities, I enjoy being outside and playing with my pets Griffin and Fat Louie. Most of all, I love spending time with my family on our small farm in Alabama.
“I recently lost my grandfather, Poppy, to COVID-19. Prior to contracting the virus, Poppy was young, full of life and very vibrant. I grew up in the house next to his and saw him almost daily. He instilled in me a hard work ethic, a love for my country, a deep faith in Christ, and that a good milkshake could make even the worst day better. My Poppy was hospitalized for several weeks. My family and I could not visit him during this time due to hospital regulations from the virus. Poppy was very weak during this time, so phone calls were limited, and when we did receive them, they were short-lived. While I know he was receiving excellent medical care, not being able to be next to him was the most difficult thing my family has faced.
“This is how Poppy’s Purpose came to light. From the moment my grandfather passed, I knew I never wanted another family to go through what my family had to endure – losing a loved one with no one by their side. It is my goal that not only COVID patients, but every single patient has someone in their corner ready to fight for them and be with them through all of their battles.
“My heart for helping others does not end with COVID patients. It has only begun with them! Medical issues such as disabilities and mental health disorders were already prevalent in the U.S. before COVID. Nursing home patients were already dealing with feeling alone and shut-in. During this pandemic, the numbers have skyrocketed! It is my goal that all of these individuals have the right to an advocate of their choosing at their side to ensure that they are receiving the best care possible. As a nursing major, I understand the importance of holistic health. It is composed of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is my purpose that every patient across the board has holistic health, and I believe this starts with patient advocacy.”
