Supporting Ukrainian Healthcare in a Time of Crisis and War

On episode 383 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Eric Cioè-Peña, MD, MPH, the Founding Director of the Center for Global Health of Northwell Health and the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell; and Danielle Filippone, BSN, RN, a registered nurse at Northwell Health’s Staten Island University Hospital and a member of the world-renowned Northwell Health Nurse Choir, finalists on America’s Got Talent who have performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden.

In response to the devastating effects of Russian aggression on Ukraine’s healthcare system, Northwell Health — the largest healthcare provider in New York — decided to proactively support their Ukrainian counterparts by raising enormous amounts of money and shipping thousands of pounds of supplies and equipment to those in need.

In order to raise awareness of the plight of Ukrainian healthcare providers and patients, Northwell Health also produced “Two Wars, a powerful 12-minute documentary directed by French-Polish independent film director Rafael Lewandowski. The film is set in Lviv Regional Children’s Specialized Clinical Hospital in western Ukraine and is centered around the daily experiences of Dr. Natalia Fedyk, a Pediatric Hematologist, who has had to balance the threat of war with an influx of patients in need of urgent health care. It features authentic Ukrainian folk music beautifully performed by the Northwell Health Nurse Choir,
