Why Nursing Associations Still Matter

On episode 392 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Cheryl Peterson, MSN, RN, Vice President for Nursing Programs at the American Nurses Association (ANA). In the course of their conversation, Keith and Cheryl discuss the role of professional nursing associations in this day and age, and how these associations can be leveraged in terms of the big issues of our day (e.g.: climate change, racism, and the challenges of safe staffing). Nursing associations like the ANA can’t do it alone, so Keith and Cheryl dive into the question of how to involve groups and individuals who are willing to embrace being stakeholders and engaging in collective action for the greater good.

In her role as VP for Nursing Programs at the ANA, Ms. Peterson is responsible for guiding ANA’s Department of Nursing Practice and Work Environment, the Center for Ethics and Human Rights, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Minority Fellowship Program and ANA’s signature initiative, Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation™. Each of these areas contribute to advancing ANA’s strategic nursing practice efforts designed to meet the association’s vision of a healthy world through the power of nursing.

Since coming to the ANA in 1990, Ms. Peterson has developed significant expertise in addressing a myriad of nursing and health issues through the application of practice and policy development strategies and strategic advocacy efforts. She has policy expertise in the areas of nursing workforce development, immigration and trade, occupational safety and health, and health system transformation. Ms. Peterson also serves as ANA’s principal liaison to the International Council of Nurses.
