The Untold Story of the Courageous Black Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis
On episode 454 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Maria Smilios, the author of The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Ms Smilios discuss how numerous Black nurses fled the Jim Crow south in search of opportunity in the non-segregated north, and how many ended up working at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island, a facility focused on the treatment — and to a large extent the warehousing — of thousands of TB patients.
Listeners may be shocked to learn that the American Nurses Association barred Black nurses from being members until they gave in to pressure in 1949, despite Black nurses' impressive contributions to the development of the profession.
A native of New York City, Ms. Smilios holds a Masters of Arts from Boston University in Religion & Literature where she was a Henry Luce Scholar and a Presidential Scholar. She also taught Essay and Research writing in the university’s writing program.
In 2007, she left Boston and moved back to New York City to teach at an all-girls high school. There she created and ran an intensive summer writing program for teens.
Maria formerly worked as a development editor in the Biomedical Sciences editing books in lung diseases, pediatric and breast cancer, neurology, and ocular diseases. It was during this time when she read a line in a book that led her to discover the story of the Black Angels.
Through writing the book, she has become in involved in advocating for affordable and accessible TB drugs in TB-heavy countries, working with and supporting organizations such as EndTB and Partners in Health.
In the past, Ms. Smilios has written for The Guardian, American Nurse, Narratively, The Rumpus, Dame Magazine, and The Forward among others.
The Black Angels is her first book.

Where Do Nurse Practitioners Turn When They Need Collaborating Docs?
On episode 453 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Annie DePasquale, MD, a physician who cares about nurse practitioners and helps them to find caring, compassionate, and interested physicians with whom they can collaborate, especially in states where such a relationship is legally required.
In 2020, Dr. DePasquale founded Collaborating Docs when she realized that the hoops that nurse practitioners have to jump through to start practicing are too exhausting for anyone to handle alone, especially in light of how challenging it is for NPs to find collaborating physicians.
Dr. DePasquale benefited greatly from the mentorship of NPs throughout her career, especially when she was a green new doctor, so she is very committed to giving back to the community that helped her so much. Her mission is to make it easy for NPs to help more patients by having freedom of choice. Collaborating Docs has helped over 2500 NPs match with collaborating physicians.
Originally studying piano & French as an undergrad at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. DePasquale subsequently graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and completed her Facility Medicine Residency program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She has taught for the Teach America program in Baltimore, MD and worked for federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in Washington, D.C., Medford, Oregon, and Lynchburg, Virginia.

How Charting Hacks Decrease NP Burnout and Increase Career Satisfaction
On episode 451 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Erica Dorn, APRN, a nurse practitioner, entrepreneur, and owner of The NP Charting School. Ms. Dorn teaches charting and time management hacks to help NPs avoid burnout and experience greater job satisfaction.
In the course of their conversation, Keith and Erica discuss how the 15-minute visit and the demands of charting cause a lack of work-life balance and nurse practitioner burnout. Many APRNs stay late at work or bring charts home to catch up on documentation, and using smart phrases, practicing problem-focused chart notes, and other hacks can significantly reduce the charting burden.
Erica D the NP is a family nurse practitioner and nurse practitioner charting coach. After overcoming burnout herself, Erica created The Burned-out Nurse Practitioner to help overwhelmed NPs create a better work-life balance and overcome burnout. Through this work, Erica realized that charting was the #1 cause of nurse practitioner burnout. So Erica created The Nurse Practitioner Charting School to be the one stop for all documentation resources created specifically for nurse practitioners. She now helps nurse practitioners improve their charting so they can STOP charting at home, create a better work-life balance, and overcome burnout.

Normalized Deviance and Mitigating the Risk of Serious Medical Errors
On episode 448 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Rebecca Dodmead, MSN, Ed, a highly experienced critical care nurse and educator who experienced a life-changing and life-threatening injury during a routine surgery. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Becca dive deep into how normalized deviance and knowledge gaps put patients at great risk of otherwise wholly preventable errors and harm.
Rebecca Dodmead has an extensive background in critical care and the ED. As an educator, she has served as both an adjunct college nursing instructor and hospital educator. Rebecca sustained a preventable injury during what was hoped to be a routine laparoscopic hysterectomy. This unfortunate event — the result of normalized deviance, significant knowledge gaps, and delays in care — found Becca navigating life with a colostomy, a wound vac, pleural effusions, a subsequent divert ileostomy, and other life-changing obstacles.
In light of what happened to her, Becca wants to use this experience to educate nurses and prevent it from happening to anyone else. Becca has also founded Artisans for Good, a nonprofit that she hopes to use as a vehicle to help others navigating serious illness.
Becca is proud to be a student in the inaugural class of Doctorate of Nursing Education at Ohio State University, with the expectation of graduating in May of 2025.

Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response
On episode 447 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Jeremy Norton, an author and firefighter who has served the diverse communities of Minneapolis since the year 2000. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Jeremy discuss his new book, Trauma Sponges: Dispatches from the Scarred Heart of Emergency Response, which is a remarkable and brilliantly written memoir that examines the toll that the work of emergency response takes on those who embrace such a career.
In Trauma Sponges, Norton also decries the sexism, racism, homophobia, misogyny, and toxic masculinity of the "old guard" of the firefighting world. He also describes in excruciating detail the death, suffering, pain, and heartbreak that he and his colleagues witness on a daily basis as they respond to the homes and streets of Minneapolis when citizens who dial 911 are having what is often the worst days of their lives amidst what Norton calls the "twin malignancies" of denial and despair.
Norton also recounts his role in the attempt to resuscitate George Floyd following his brutal treatment by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. He shares his observations of the societal patterns that continue to haunt our country and the Black men who are all too often on the receiving end of egregious, and often deadly, treatment at the hands of the police.
A proud native of Washington, D.C., Jeremy Norton has lived in the Colorado mountains, the Tennessee mountains, and the Minnesota not-mountains. He taught middle- and high-school literature and has also taught at Minneapolis' Loft Literary Center. He has a strong stomach and a grim, capacious sense of humor.

How Can Hospitality and Customer Service Improve the Patient Experience?
On episode 441 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews author and consultant Peter Yesawich, PhD regarding his new book, Hospitable Healthcare: Just What the Patient Ordered! In the book, Yesawich and his co-author Dr. Stowe Shoemaker, PhD make the argument that healthcare providers and facilities have the power to implement successful strategies championed by the hospitality industry in order to exponentially improve the patient experience. In the authors' view, healthcare's lack of attention to the basics of hospitality and customer service do significant damage to the public's view of the healthcare system and the facilities and providers that it employs. The concepts of hospitality have the potential to vastly improve healthcare delivery.
Peter C. Yesawich is Chairman of Hospitable Healthcare Partners, LLC, and Vice Chairman, Emeritus of MMGY Global. Hospitable Healthcare Partners is a consultancy serving hospitality and healthcare industry clients. MMGY Global is America’s leading marketing communications agency serving travel, leisure, and entertainment industry clients. Why is American Healthcare Upside Down?
On episode 435 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Henry Buchwald, a world-renowned surgeon, author, professor, and patient healthcare advocate who contends that it's entirely possible for us to turn our broken healthcare system right-side up to serve the best interests of both patients and clinicians, now and in the future. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Buchwald focus on the statistics, revelations, and suggestions for positive change outlined in his brilliant and highly readable new book, "Healthcare Upside Down: A Critical Examination of Policy and Practice".

After Columbia College, Medical School, and Internship, he served on flying status as the Base Flight Surgeon, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, now part of US Strategic Command, responsible with eleven other commands for strategic deterrence.
Subsequently, he completed surgical residency at the University of Minnesota, including research for inaugurating the partial ileal bypass operation to lower cholesterol levels; he was the Principal Investigator for the $65 million dollar Program on the Surgical Control of the Hyperlipidemias Trial that was the first trial to demonstrate that cholesterol lowering decreases atherosclerotic heart disease, prevents heart attacks and peripheral vascular disease, actually regresses coronary artery lesions, and increases life expectancy.
Dr. Buchwald stayed at the University of Minnesota for the rest of his career as Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and the Owen H. and Sally Davidson Wangensteen Chair in Experimental Surgery. In his engineering endeavors, he was responsible for the invention for the first implantable drug infusion pump and the ubiquitous infusion port used by millions annually.
He lives on the outskirts of Minneapolis with his wife, Emilie. He spends his private time horseback riding, writing, running, and swimming. The Buchwalds have four daughters, who, with their husbands, for the most part, live close by, enabling Henry and Emilie to enjoy their six grandchildren.

A Recovering Psychiatrist on Finding Your Authentic Self and an Optimal Path to Healing
On episode 430 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. Fred Moss, a mental health advocate and "recovering psychiatrist" who serves in many capacities: keynote speaker, psychiatry expert witness, podcaster, mental health coach, and teacher. This wide-ranging conversation centers around Dr. Moss's contention that finding your authentic self, your true voice, and optimal healing is entirely possible, and the traditional route of psychiatric treatment is not the only path that can lead to psychological and spiritual wellness.
A desire to help people be real and heard has been the driving force leading Dr. Moss to multiple settings and roles as a psychiatrist over the years and compelling him to continually look for better, more effective ways to provide the highest quality care to align people with their most authentic self. He is the creator of Welcome To Humanity, The True Voice Course, Healing the Healer, and Global Madness.
As the founder of the Welcome to Humanity movement and the True Voice Mastermind and methodology, Dr. Fred now finds himself making the difference he came here to make. His years in the community, where he has been a physician to over 40,000 patients, and his storied and adventurous life traveling around the world has left him uniquely qualified to remind us of what we already know. A Nurse Inventor and Entrepreneur Creates Nursing Tools That Matter
On episode 419 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Paul Castaneda, RN, CCRN, a 25-year veteran ICU nurse who is also the Founder of NursingTools.com. Nurses are natural problem-solvers, and if they have the chance to create practical tools that solve real-world problems, everyone wins.
It all started in June of 2017. Paul had become frustrated looking for tools specifically for nurses to use at the bedside, and he noticed that medical-surgical, ICU, ER, NICU, and other nurses were always borrowing instruments and modifying medical equipment in order to get simple tasks done.
So Paul decided to designed scissors that could "cradle" ports and effortlessly unfasten stubborn connections that seal themselves from protein-based medications.
Nursing Tools currently sells on Amazon and their website, periodically adding other products that are born from bedside innovation and necessity.

How to Be a Visionary 21st-Century Healthcare Leader
On episode 407 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Certified Executive Coach Ronnie Kinsey, BSN, RN, MBA about how to be a visionary 2121st-century healthcare leader who can readily identify what's right, as well as what needs to change.
Ronnie Kinsey, BSN, RN, MBA is well-credentialed as a seasoned clinician and healthcare leader with a breadth of experience in highly recognized academic and specialty medical centers, as well as in the corporate arena.
Mr. Kinsey has made it his life mission to understand what is right with healthcare. Beyond events in early life calling him into a career in healthcare, he planned to experience working in several dynamic workplaces and well-developed healthcare systems in order to learn, grow, and make the best impact wherever possible. He is quick to share that he has had a fascinating career and an exciting life built around those opportunities in diverse geographic locations.
Ronnie is eager to share valuable insights about the transitions that have affected the roles and responsibilities of nurses over time. He began his nursing journey with paper charting when computers were not nurses' concern. Observing the wave of electronic charting crashing quickly toward the clinical setting, Ronnie quickly signed up to be part of planning and launching these systems so that he could understand how he and his own nursing practice were going to be personally impacted by them, as well as how healthcare would evolve as a result.
Having seen several public health emergencies over the course of his career, Ronnie has observed that many have involved a virus of some kind. From his perspective, COVID — coupled with short staffing, overwhelm at the bedside, divisive public beliefs about the pandemic, and increased administrative responsibilities laid upon the shoulders of hard-working clinicians — has by far been the single most disruptive event impacting nursing and healthcare since his career began.
Ronnie remains optimistic regarding the opportunity to improve the nursing, clinician, and healthcare experience with an eye toward the goal of manageable value-based outcomes. He is focused on leadership and executive coaching that has the power to develop and support bold, informed leaders who can lead us on the path to sustainable solutions to the outsized concerns seen in healthcare and leadership today.
